California importer recalls more than 15,000 pounds of salami

Oct. 29, 2013

More than 15,000 pounds of salami products imported by Ferrarini USA are being recalled because they were not presented for import re-inspection, as required.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced that more than 15,000 pounds of salami products imported by Ferrarini USA are being recalled because they were not presented for import re-inspection, as required.

California-based Ferrarini USA was supposed to present the products for re-inspection at the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) before they can be approved for sale on U.S. markets. Because the company failed to do so, a recall of 15,118 pounds of salami has been ordered. The products subject to the recall include Salame Emilia Ferrarini, Salame Parma Ferrarini and Ferrarini Salame Parma. The products can be identified by the code IT G4279 CE placed inside the Italian mark of inspection, but individual logs may not bear the code.

The salami products were shipped to a number of distributors in California and Arizona for further distribution, Food Poisoning Bulletin reported. At present, there are no reports of illnesses linked with the recalled products. If consumers have bought a product that is subject to a recall, they can return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

The FSIS said that it carried out regular checks that aimed to test recall effectiveness and to verify that companies conducting the recall have notified customers of the procedure. Under USDA regulation, companies are also obliged to inform the agency of the measures they take to ensure that the recalled products do not reach consumers.
