Equipment innovations in the process industries

Oct. 30, 2016

Whenever Processing heads to a show, we take the opportunity to visit with equipment and technology manufacturers as well.

Often when we head to Houston for a trade show, we take the opportunity to visit with equipment and technology manufacturers as well. Our trip to the Turbomachinery/Pump Symposia in September was no exception.

District Manager Jay Haas and Editor in Chief Lori Ditoro watch a dual-head filler being tested with National Sales Manager Kevin Calelly at Specialty Equipment’s Houston headquarters.

We enjoyed our visit to Specialty Equipment, a manufacturer of liquid fill equipment. During our time with Kevin Calelly, national sales manager for the company, we toured the facility and got a sneak peek at a piece of equipment that will be at the company’s PACK EXPO booth in November. Liquid fillers are important to many industries including the food industry. I was excited to see another piece of equipment, a dual-head filler, being tested during our tour.

In this issue’s cover series, we cover two topics important to food processing: refrigeration and odor control. First, a new, energy-efficient approach to refrigeration is discussed. This article‘s angle examines all sources of heat in the facility and how to remove them.

In our second article, the control of odor that occurs when disposing of slurry following sugar production is featured. The method suppresses odor and dust during the injection of beet slurring into the soil as a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer.

Also in this issue is a section on process automation and instrumentation. Learn about taking large amounts of data, drilling into it for the information important for operations and overall diagnostics, and taking simplified temperature measurements without a thermowell.

As we move into October, we look forward to attending PACK EXPO and learning more about industry trends and new technology that will aid in food processing and packaging.
