What is RSS?

RSS is short for "Real Simple Syndication." It uses a technology called XML to deliver news headlines to a desktop RSS reader or directly to Web browsers.

What do I need to start?

You will likely need to download an RSS reader. RSS readers vary slightly in how they look and act, so you may find yourself testing several before settling on one. Many are free of charge; some charge a small fee. We've included a list of popular RSS readers on this page.
Certain Web browsers, including Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer and the Mac-based Safari are RSS enabled.

Topic Feeds

Filtration & Separation

The final clarification stage in most processes involves a filter. With environmental pressures and the need for ever-finer degrees of separation, filter media makers produce increasingly finer fibers or make use of membranes. Product types include for gravity sedimentation, inertial & centrifugal sedimentation, screens & strainers, depth filtration, gravity filters and vacuum filters.

Instrumentation

Instrumentation embodies the art and science of measurement and control of process variables within a production area. An instrument is a device that measures or regulates process variables, including flow, temperature, level and pressure.

Mixing & Blending

For bulk solids handling, types of mixers and blenders include rotary batch, fluidized bed and cylindrical plow. Types of size reduction equipment include cutters, breakers, shredders and mills. In the food, chemical, pharmaceutical and plastics industries, industrial mixers and blenders are mainly used to mix different materials. Dependent upon the ingredients, different types of blades produce a good quality mixture, including dry blending devices, paste mixing designs for high viscosity products and high shear models for emulsification, particle size reduction and homogenization.

Piping, Tubing, Hoses & Fittings

A seemingly endless variety of piping, tubing, hoses and fittings are used in process industries in managing the flow of liquids. Services provided to the industry include websites that specialize in finding hard-to-locate fittings and suppliers with capabilities for custom extrusions for the fabrication of fittings and hose assemblies.

Plant Maintenance & Safety

Five general areas of safety that affect most plant personnel regardless of the type of work performed including general housekeeping; walking/working surfaces and areas; illumination/lighting; electrical and signage. Maintenance, and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) includes all the activities and materials needed to keep a functional unit in a state where it can perform its required functions. Professionals speak of preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance and such things as reliability-centered maintenance. Maintenance and MRO are frequently managed by enterprise software applications that impose work order regimens and standard inventory practices on processes.

Material Handling

Bulk material handling equipment handles dry materials such as ores, coal, wood chips, sand, gravel and stone in loose bulk form. Systems can include equipment such as conveyor belts, screw conveyors, stackers, reclaimers, bucket elevators, truck dumpers, railcar dumpers and hoppers — combined with storage facilities such as silos. Advanced bulk material handling systems feature integrated bulk storage, conveying and discharge.

Powder Handling

An engineering field centered around the design of equipment for handling dry materials using conveyors, feeders, fillers and other type equipment to move dry bulk solids composed of a very large number of very fine particles that may flow freely when shaken or tilted.

Pumps & Seals

A pump moves fluids, including liquids and gases, and occasionally slurries, by mechanical action. A great variety of pump types are to be found, but they are usually classified in three major groups, according to how they move fluids, including direct lift, displacement and gravity.

Valves & Actuators

Devices that direct, regulate or control liquid flow by opening, closing or partially obstructing various passageways, valves are often classified by their means of actuation — hydraulic, pneumatic, manual, solenoid and motor. Actuators are a kind of transducer, typically transforming an input signal into motion and thereby controlling valve position.

Adhesives

An adhesive is a material, typically liquid or semi-liquid, that bonds items together. Glue comes from organic compounds, while adhesives are chemical-based. Adhering materials called epoxies, caulks or sealants have special additives that impart properties suitable for particular jobs or applications.

Agitators

In the process industries, agitators mix liquids together; promote chemical reactions; keep bulk liquids homogenous in storage; and increase heat transfer. Types include rotating, or mechanical agitators; pipes fitted with baffles, or static agitators; rotating tank agitators; agitators working with a pump blasting liquid; and others.

Asset Management

The systematic process of operating, maintaining, upgrading and disposing of assets to receive the highest financial return is often referred to as “asset management.” Best practices for asset management, including in process plants, are increasingly embodied in asset management, maintenance and other type management software.

Automation

The use of machines, control systems and information technology in the production of goods and delivery of services, automation includes development of the programmable logic controller (PLC), distributed control systems (DCS) and infrastructure for plant networking. Systems synchronize the flow of inputs from sensors and events with the flow of outputs to actuators and events, for greater flexibility in production.

Blowers & Fans

Producing large volumes of air at relatively low pressures – typically from one to four bar – blowers have many uses and are a significant consumer of energy in many industrial processes. In wastewater treatment, for example, they are used to deliver air to the aerobic bacteria that play a central role in breaking down sludge. Process air fans are important components in machines and installations, for everything from industrial process ventilation to material handling.

Centrifuges

Generally driven by an electric motor, a centrifuge puts an object in rotation around a fixed axis, applying a force perpendicular to the axis. Via the sedimentation principle, centripedal acceleration causes denser substances to separate out along the radial direction, while lighter objects tend to move to the top. Large industrial centrifuges are used in water and wastewater treatment to dry sludges. The resulting dry product is often termed cake and the water leaving a centrifuge is called centrate.

Chillers

Chillers remove heat from a liquid via a vapor compression or absorption refrigeration cycle. This liquid can then be circulated through a heat exchanger to cool air or equipment. Chillers are often used in the plastic industry in injection and blow molding, and in most of the process industries. Chillers for industrial applications can be centralized, where a single chiller serves multiple cooling needs, or decentralized, where each application or machine has its own chiller.

Compressors

A gas compressor is a mechanical device that increases the pressure of a gas by reducing its volume; many type compressors are on the market, as with motors, to which it has similar categories. In process industries, they are used to compress intermediate and end product gases; in gas turbine systems to compress the intake combustion air; and to provide pneumatic tools.

Conveyors

A horizontal, inclined or vertical device for moving bulk materials or objects in a path predetermined by the design of the device and having points of loading and discharge either fixed or selective. Conveyor types include skip hoists, vertical reciprocating and inclined reciprocating conveyors. Typical conveyors used in industry include belt, roller or other ground conveyors; pneumatic conveying systems; chain conveyors; and overhead conveyors.

Feeders

Feeders, such as rotary, roller or belt conveyors, are commonly used in industrial applications as a component in bulk or specialty material handling systems.

Heat Exchangers

A heat exchanger is a piece of equipment built for efficient heat transfer from one medium to another, and typically removing heat from an industrial process. The shell-and-tube heat exchanger is perhaps the most common type.

Heat Treat Furnaces & Ovens

Heat treating includes a range of industrial and metalworking processes used to alter the physical and sometimes chemical properties of a material, including annealing, carburizing and tempering, through the application of high temperatures and often use of an artificial atmosphere. Heat treat systems, including furnaces, ovens and quench tanks are found in many process facilities.

Level Measurement

Level sensors detect the level of substances that flow, including liquids, slurries, granular materials and powders. Level detection sensors include vibrating, rotating paddle, mechanical diaphragm, microwave (or radar), capacitance, optical, pulsed-ultrasonic and ultrasonic. In deriving the value of the height of some material from a lower point to a higher point, some level measurement devices do so by “drawing” horizontal lines plumb and parallel to each other at the two points. Further refinements in measurement follow from this point.

Motors & Drives

Given growing emphasis on energy efficiency, motors and drives are a big story in today’s process industries. For example, many industrial processes move at different speeds at different times for different products. Besides adjusting pump or fan flow to process conditions, varying drive speed may save energy compared with other flow control techniques. Variable, or adjustable, speed drives were developed as a means to improved process control, but their use highlights growing energy-efficiency efforts. If the output speed can be changed without steps over a range, the drive is usually referred to as variable speed. Adjustable and variable speed drives may be purely mechanical, electromechanical, hydraulic or electronic.

Oil Skimmers

An oil skimmer is a machine that separates a liquid from particles floating on it from another liquid, e.g., removing oil floating on water. There are two types: weir and oleophilic. Oleophilic skimmers are further differentiated by the type material used in oil collection.

Packaging Equipment

Packaging is the science, art, and technology of enclosing or protecting products for distribution, storage, sale, and use. The processing industries use a wide variety of filling machines, case packing, pick and place and other type packaging equipment.

Tanks & Vessels

As is easily imagined, a wide variety of tanks and vessels are used in process industries, and the use of tanks, or large receptacles for liquids or gas, and vessels, hollow containers for holding liquids, is amongst the most primary of technologies, yet fully enmeshed in the most modern process control systems.

Vibration Equipment

Vibration is a characteristic of virtually all industrial machines and can be indicative of the need for corrective or preventive maintenance.

Chemical

The chemical industry produces a wide range of goods central to the modern world economy, including base chemicals, life science, specialty chemicals and consumer products. The main raw materials of the chemical industry are fossil fuels, air, water, salt, limestone, sulfur and equivalents, and some specialized raw materials such as phosphates and the mineral fluorspar. The chemical industry converts these raw materials into primary, secondary or tertiary products.

Food & Beverage

The food & beverage industry specializes in the conceptualization, making of and delivery of foods. The food industry is a complex, global collective of diverse businesses that supply much of the food energy consumed by the world’s population. Beverage processing includes soft drinks and bottled water manufacturing, wineries, breweries and distilleries. Within food & beverage markets, better management of batch processing is needed as food distribution channels have become more complex. In addition to wholesalers, grocers and food-service providers, manufacturers see new customers in alternative retail formats and the tremendous growth in private-label goods. Their challenge is maintaining product consistency amidst increasing variation in raw ingredients, recipes and packaging.

Oil & Gas

Use of fossil fuels — including oil and natural gas — is one of the defining characteristics of our time. Over the last two decades, the emergence of national oil companies and dwindling oil resources have moved the major independent oil and gas companies to tap into more and more unconventional resources, including deepwater subsea, shale plays, tar sands and subsalt. Given its complexity, oil field development is coordinated amongst multiple independent and highly specialized contractors, including industry equipment suppliers; engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) concerns; and service

Petrochemical

Petrochemicals are derived from oil, gas or coal, and from renewable sources such as corn or sugar cane. Petrochemicals used as raw materials — or feedstocks — include ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene, xylene and naphthalene. Two petrochemical classes are olefins, including ethylene and propylene, and aromatics including benzene, toluene, and zylene isomers. Oil refineries produce olefins and aromatics by fluid catalytic cracking of petroleum fractions. Chemical plants produce olefins by steam cracking of natural gas liquids like ethane and propane. Aromatics are produced by catalytic reforming of naphtha. Olefins and aromatics are the building-blocks for a wide range of materials such as solvents, detergents and adhesives. Olefins are the basis for polymers and oligomers used in plastics, resins, fibers, elastomers lubricants and gels.

Pharmaceutical

The pharmaceutical industry develops, produces and markets drugs or pharmaceuticals licensed for sale as medications. Pharmaceutical companies make pharmaceutical preparations or finished drugs; biological products, such as serums, bulk chemicals and botanicals used in making finished drugs; and diagnostic substances such as pregnancy and blood glucose kits. Pharmaceutical processing encompasses the end-process formulations have to go through, including packaging, labeling, processing and formatting drugs into tablets, liquids and gels. Bio-pharma is a collection of technologies that capitalize on the attributes of cells, such as their manufacturing capabilities, and put, biological molecules, such as DNA and proteins, to work for us.
