Concern about possible Salmonella contamination has led to the recall of six brands of peanut butter and almond butter.

nSpired Natural Foods, Inc. announced on Tuesday that it was voluntarily recalling certain lots of Arrowhead Mills Peanut Butters, MaraNatha Almond Butters and Peanut Butters and specific private label nut butters branded as Kroger, Safeway, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods 365. The affected products are packaged in glass and plastic jars of various sizes and with a range of use-by dates on the top of the lid.

The nut butters were distributed across the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates and the Dominican Republic. They were also available for purchase online.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration alerted the company to the potential risk following routine testing.

nSpired Natural Foods said that it had received reports of four illnesses that may be associated with the products and was initiating a recall as a precautionary measure.

The company added that it was working with customers and retailers to remove the affected products from store shelves and warehouses.

Consumers who have purchased any of the products included in the recall are urged to dispose of them and contact nSpired Natural Foods for a replacement or refund, and with general inquiries.

Healthy people who become infected with Salmonella can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. It can be more serious in young children, frail or elderly people and those with weakened immune systems, among whom Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.
