International food major Kraft Foods Group is voluntary recalling almost 8,000 cases of selected varieties of regular Kraft American Singles Pasteurized Prepared Cheese, the company and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in separate statements.

The FDA said that the reason for the recall was because one of Kraft's suppliers did not store an ingredient in the product in accordance with its temperature standards, which could lead to premature spoilage or possibly foodborne illness.

"Consumers who purchased any of these products should not eat them. They should return them to the store where purchased for an exchange or full refund," the FDA said in the statement.

The affected cheese products were shipped to customers across the U.S.,but it was not distributed outside of the country, it added.

Kraft said that it is issuing the recall as a precaution, adding that it has had no consumer illness complaints for the product associated with the recall. The cheese slices were produced at the company's Missouri-based facility.

NASDAQ-listed Kraft is one of North America's largest consumer food and beverage groups, with annual revenues of over $18 billion. The company employs 22,500 people in the U.S. and Canada.
