    Revenues from ‘smart water management’ solutions to top $12 billion in 2018

    The smart water management solutions category includes, among others, enterprise asset management for water and wastewater utilities, monitoring of water distribution networks, advanced pressure management, meter data management and residential water efficiency software.

    The global market for smart water management (SWM) solutions is expected to deliver solid growth in the years through 2018. According to a new report published by MarketsandMarkets, revenues will rise by 17.2% annually between 2013 and 2018. If that proves to be the case, the market will reach $12.03 billion in value compared to $5.43 billion in 2013.

    In terms of devices, MarketsandMarkets provides an overview of one-way water meters, or automated meter reading (AMR) meters, and two-way water meters, or advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) meters. The solutions category includes, among others, enterprise asset management for water and wastewater utilities, monitoring of water distribution networks, advanced pressure management, meter data management and residential water efficiency software. When it comes to services, MarketsandMarkets covers valve management, pipeline condition assessment, hydrant management and information management.

    Aside from analyzing the SWM market by various categories, the report also examines the strategies employed by leading market players to enhance their competitiveness. According to the publication, most SWM solution providers bet on innovation and cloud technologies to maintain their edge. Cloud-based solutions in particular allow water utilities to defer spending and benefit from customized products. The group of leading solution vendors includes GE, Schneider Electric, Siemens, IBM and ABB, their specialty being the provision of process automation and control solutions for water and wastewater utilities. In the enterprise asset management and advanced analytics segments, the key providers are Oracle, Ventyx and IBM.
