Jacobs Engineering to play ‘crucial’ role in ExxonMobil ethane cracker project

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. will provide engineering, procurement and construction services for a multi-billion dollar ethane cracker project in ExxonMobil Chemical Company’s Texas-based Baytown complex.

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc., headquartered in Pasadena, California, will provide engineering, procurement and construction services for a multi-billion dollar ethane cracker project in ExxonMobil Chemical Company's Texas-based Baytown complex, and associated premium product facilities in Mont Belvieu in the state, the company announced on Thursday.

Jacobs Engineering was awarded the contract from ExxonMobil — the value of which has not been disclosed — to provide site enabling works and interconnections services on the two sites. This includes site preparation across 350 acres for the ethane cracker in Baytown and over a 100-acre product facility plant in Mont Belvieu.

It will also integrate a new 1.5 million ton per year ethane steam cracker in Baytown and two new high performance polyethylene lines in Mont Belvieu into ExxonMobil's existing facilities — with a total capacity of 650,000 tons per year.

The integration aspect of the project, to ensure interconnectivity between the two sites, requires approximately 63,000 feet of pipe to integrate into the existing Baytown facility and 43,000 feet of pipe for the existing Mont Belvieu facility.

Jacobs Engineering has a long history in the chemicals industry and currently has hundreds of major complex construction projects underway globally. It is known for its integrated approach to engineering, construction and continued maintenance, the company said

Mike Autrey, Jacobs Group vice president welcomed the development, saying: "Our interface management and integration role is crucial to the success of this expansion project. We are excited to bring our execution skills and experience to support ExxonMobil in this important venture."
