The crop protection unit of international chemical giant BASF will open its first formulation and packaging plant in Yangkou Chemical Industrial Park in China's Jiangsu province by the end of the year, the company announced this week.

The new facility will have an annual production capacity of 10,000 metric tons and aims to provide tailor products to farmers in the region, including fungicides, insecticides and herbicides solutions, BASF Crop Production added.

Dr. Albert Heuser, the company's president for the greater China region, said that the new plant highlights BASF's long-term commitment to the Chinese market as the second largest economy in the world.

"Providing every Chinese person with healthy, safe food is a priority in the agenda. With our innovative solutions we are able to contribute to fulfill the demand for healthy crops," Heuser added.

BASF's crop protection, which reported sales in the region of EUR5.2 billion in 2013, plans to increase investment in property, plant and equipment globally in the next five years, and further participate in the development of Chinese agriculture. The new plant is expected to create over 100 new jobs in the region.

BASF Crop Production provides various solutions in crop protection, seed treatment and biological control, as well as solutions to manage water, nutrients and plant stress. Its portfolio also includes products for turf and ornamental plants and public health.
