Oct. 2, 2015

Sanderson Farms determined that the contamination occurred due to a malfunction with an ice-making machine used during production, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

A poultry firm has recalled more than half a million pounds of chicken products that may be contaminated with metal.

Sanderson Farms, Inc. said that it was voluntarily recalling 551,090 pounds of chicken products produced at its plant in Hazlehurst, Miss. after one of its customers, a processing facility, found metal shavings.

The products involved in the recall were produced on September 17 and 18, 2015 and were shipped to processing facilities in Georgia and Louisiana.

Sanderson Farms determined that the contamination occurred due to a malfunction with an ice-making machine used during production, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture‘s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service.

None of the products under recall were shipped to grocery stores or packed directly for consumers.

Sanderson Farms explained that the recall includes ice packed chicken products sold to three customers who use the products for additional processing into further processed chicken products.

The products subject to recall bear the establishment number “EST. P-247” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The company has identified all of the products that may be affected and notified its customers to place the products on hold and return them.

There have been no reports of injuries or adverse reactions caused by consumption of these products.
