The International Powder and Bulk Solids Conference & Exhibition was in full swing Wednesday, April 30, at the Donald E. Stephens convention center in Rosemont, IL, with a second full day of conference education and a bustling show floor.

Key conference sessions included:

  • A morning keynote panel discussion about women in the processing industries featuring Ali Roth of Harrington Group, Snehal Prabhu of The Clorox Company, and Jorie Kassel of Particle Technology Labs and moderated by Kristen Kazarian, managing editor of Powder and Bulk Solids.
  • A panel discussion about how to achieve a smooth system startup featuring Thomas Meade of Bulk Material Equipment, Rod Henricks of Coperion, and Todd Smith and Jonathan McPherson of Kansas State University’s Advanced Manufacturing & Bulk Solids Technology Center.
  • Presentations on overcoming segregation and sampling issues, effective blending, and selecting dilute or dense phase pneumatic conveying by Eric Maynard of Jenike & Johanson.

The Center Stage in the exhibit hall featured numerous presentations on a range of topics, including:

  • How to select explosion protection systems and methods based on material and process conditions presented by Kevin Jeffries of Fike.
  • How extrusion improves efficiency and throughput in battery material production by Rod Henricks of Coperion.
  • Solid-liquid separation technologies by Barry Perlmutter of Perlmutter & Idea Development (P&ID).
  • AI-based foreign particle analysis by Nisarg Mistry of Houston MJ Associates.
  • Integrating the four key dimensions of bulk material handling by Colin Barbeau of Hatch.
  • Combustible dust explosion protection strategies by Andreas Brandl of EIP Technologies.

Tariffs continued to be a hot topic on the show floor, though some equipment suppliers are currently absorbing some or all of the added costs for their customers. For example, according to Chad Grether, regional sales manager for Ontario-based Brabender Technologie, his company has committed to covering half of the current 25% tariff on products imported from Canada.

Rick Buschini, vice president of material handling for ENTEK Adaptive, said that, while some companies had been hesitant to move forward with projects, some of the uncertainty about whether tariffs would be implemented has gone away and just the final tariff amounts remain uncertain. “We’re to the point now where everyone knows that the tariffs are coming,” Buschini says. “So, people are saying, ‘We’re just going to charge X percent now and say it could change.’ We’re seeing people start to take projects off hold and really start doing more. But people are still going to be a little conservative about it, because there are still some unknowns.”

Buschini says that ENTEK Adaptive plans to continue implementing the growth strategy the company announced in early April, which includes building and installing liquid and mechanical systems while leveraging a dedicated project manager and additional engineering support staff as well as adding new U.S. technical sales engineers.

“We’ve spent the last three years [since ENTEK acquired Adaptive Engineering & Fabrication] really building the foundation…now our engineering staff, our project management, our execution is ready to go. We are already growing, but now we have the capability to really grow.”

The Powder Show wraps up Thursday, May 1, with the exhibit hall open from 9 am to 3 pm.
