Sasol destoning plant strengthens coal supply for synthetic fuels production
Sasol has opened a new destoning plant in Mpumalanga, South Africa, aimed at improving coal quality and supporting operational performance at its Secunda Operations.
The facility, which reached beneficial operation in December 2025, removes high-density stone from run-of-mine coal sourced from the Thubelisha and Bosjesspruit mines. The project involved converting the existing Twistdraai Export Plant into a dedicated destoning operation.
By reducing ash and sinks before coal enters the gasification process, the plant improves the quality of syngas used across Sasol’s synthetic fuels and chemicals value chain.
According to Sasol, the plant has already contributed to measurable improvements in coal quality. During the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, average sinks levels fell to below 14%, increasing the availability of higher-quality coal to Secunda Operations and supporting overall production.
Sasol said the project marks a step forward in its efforts to improve operational reliability and support long-term value creation within its mining and processing operations.
