ABB has launched the 500 X pH/ORP sensor, a new measurement device designed for industrial processes where extreme conditions often cause conventional sensors to fail quickly.

According to ABB, the 500 X sensor is engineered for demanding applications that involve extreme temperatures, aggressive chemicals, and wide pH ranges. These environments frequently cause reference poisoning in traditional pH and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) sensors, resulting in short operating life. ABB said its proprietary design helps the 500 X resist both poisoning and fouling.

Customer evaluation trials conducted under harsh conditions showed the sensor lasting up to ten times longer than conventional pH/ORP sensors. The trials included processes with extreme temperatures and challenging pH levels.

The sensor integrates with ABB transmitters through the EZLink digital platform, enabling connect-and-measure capability. With the introduction of the AWT424 transmitter, operators can access measurement data, diagnostics, audit information, and software updates through a smartphone using the EZLink Connect application.

The 500 X is part of ABB’s broader pH/ORP sensor portfolio. The 500 series, which includes the 500 X and 500 PRO, is designed for harsh industrial and marine environments involving high pressure, elevated temperatures, and fouling conditions.

ABB’s product range also includes the 100 series sensors for general water applications such as drinking water, wastewater treatment, irrigation, aquaculture, environmental monitoring, and boiler corrosion control. The 700 series offers rechargeable sensors intended for high-accuracy measurement in specialized applications, including ultra-low conductivity processes.

According to ABB, the new 500 X sensor combines the durability associated with its established TB product line with digital connectivity capabilities aimed at improving reliability and reducing maintenance requirements in demanding industrial processes.
