Metso unveils flip-flow screens to boost high-pressure grinding roll performance
Metso has launched the GFF Series flip-flow screens, designed to improve fine dry screening performance for difficult and often moist materials in mining and aggregates applications.
The new screening system targets more efficient classification in processes such as sand manufacturing and high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) circuits. According to Metso, the GFF Series enables finer and more accurate particle separation, helping reduce circulating loads and improve overall energy efficiency in comminution operations.
The screens combine flip-flow and conventional deck technology with high excitation forces to support precise screening in both dry and wet conditions. The system achieves cut sizes down to 0.5 millimeters in dry applications and 0.3 millimeters in wet applications, while reducing blinding and pegging.
Metso states that improved classification performance can lower process water demand and reduce energy consumption in downstream grinding. In aggregates production, higher screening efficiency also helps minimize cross-contamination and maintain consistent product quality.
The design emphasizes operational reliability, with anti-blinding screen decks intended to reduce unplanned downtime. The company also highlighted ease of maintenance and serviceability as factors that can improve equipment availability and reduce total cost of ownership.
According to Michael Gyberg, Vice President of Screening Equipment Solutions at Metso, the system was developed in response to customer demand for high-performance screening of fine and challenging materials without relying on wet screening methods.
The GFF Series also supports improved performance in HPGR circuits by enabling more accurate classification ahead of downstream grinding. Metso notes that finer particle size distribution can increase the share of material processed by energy-efficient HPGR systems.
Stefan Sakendorf, Director of HRC products at Metso, said the finer screen cuts achieved with flip-flow technology can support the implementation of advanced comminution circuits, including HRCe–Vertimill configurations.
The introduction of the GFF Series expands Metso’s screening portfolio, following the launch of its Grande Series in 2025. The company said the new system strengthens its ability to provide end-to-end comminution solutions, including screening equipment, grinding technologies and related services aimed at improving productivity and reducing energy and water use.
