Sinamics S220 delivers faster control for industrial drive applications

Siemens has launched the Sinamics S220 drive system with a new CU320-3 control unit designed to increase performance and integration density.

Siemens has launched the Sinamics S220 drive system, a high-performance platform designed for demanding industrial drive applications. The system introduces the new CU320-3 control unit and is part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio.

The CU320-3 can control up to 12 axes from a single control unit. A multicore processor provides computing capacity, while the Drive-Cliq-Express interface supports data transfer at up to 1 gigabit per second.

The drive system also uses three voltage sensors per axis for sensorless control and supports improved energy efficiency and operating robustness, according to Siemens.

Sinamics S220 integrates with Siemens TIA Portal and supports virtual commissioning through DriveSim Designer. The system also provides connectivity features for collecting field data and supporting applications such as predictive maintenance.

At launch, the system includes air-cooled motor modules in book-size and chassis designs for three-phase 380- to 480-volt applications. Rated current ranges from 3 amperes, corresponding to 1.1 kilowatts, to 1,518 amperes and 900 kilowatts.

The system can reach 6,984 kilowatts through an eight-fold parallel connection. Regenerative active infeeds are available from 210 to 921 kilowatts and can also be connected in parallel.

Siemens has also introduced air-cooled universal modules that can operate as either motor modules or active line modules. Six devices cover the specified performance range for spare parts cases and allow rapid adaptation to changing requirements..

Safety and cybersecurity are integrated into the Sinamics S220 architecture. Siemens reduced the safety cycle from 12 milliseconds to 4 milliseconds, enabling faster responses in safety-related applications.

The drive system is SIL 3 certified for all operating states. Siemens also developed Sinamics S220 under a secure development process based on IEC 62443-4-1. Integrated security features include user and access controls, encrypted drive data, and integrity and authentication checks for firmware and configuration data.

For sustainability, Siemens designed Sinamics S220 with a compact form factor and includes Industrial Edge applications for monitoring energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. An ISO 14021-certified environmental product declaration documents the system’s environmental performance across its lifecycle.
