German industrial gases specialist Messer announced last week that it is building a new production plant for industrial gases in Turek, Poland.

The company is investing EUR30 million to build the facility, which will produce air gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and argon. It will also invest EUR3 million in the construction of a filling plant for technical gases in cylinders.

Messer also operates an air separation unit in Rybnik, Poland. This will be its second plant of the same type in the central European country.

Construction work is already under way and the air separation unit is scheduled to begin operations at the start of the third quarter of 2015. Commissioning of the filling plant will follow one year later, in the third quarter of 2016. The two new facilities will create around 25 new jobs – 15 in the air separation unit and 10 in the filling plant.

Messer expects the unit to produce 400 tons of liquid oxygen and nitrogen per day. This corresponds to the capacity of 20 tankers.

It will produce high purity gases that can be used in the medical, pharmaceutical and research sectors, and will also satisfy the stringent requirements for manufacturing of food gases, Messer said.

Dirk Funfhausen, managing director of Messer in Poland, explained that through this investment the company hopes to increase its market share and benefit from Poland's robust economic growth. In addition, the new facility is expected to optimise logistics costs and enhance the
