Slimming agent Dexaprine, produced by California-based company iForce Nutrition, has been banned in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom over concerns that the fatburner causes a number of life-threatening conditions.

Dexaprine is sold mostly online in several variations. The slimming agent is used by bodybuilders as a means to lose weight and gain energy, but over the past six months there have been several complaints filed to the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority, linked to the product. People who have consumed Dexaprine apparently suffered serious side effects, such as severe nausea, headaches and palpitations. The substance has led to a cardiac arrest in one case, it was claimed. As a result, Dutch authorities issued an alert to consumers and ordered retailers to stop selling Dexaprine.

The UK followed the Dutch example by banning sales of the product. The British Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued a statement, explaining that it had instructed the only online retailer that provided the product to UK consumers to remove Dexaprine from its catalogue.

Currently, laboratory analyses of the product are being conducted. Dexaprine contains a proprietary blend as well as green tea, citrus extracts, acacia and caffeine. The product is still sold widely in the United States, according to the NutraIngredients website.

The manufacturer, iForce Nutrition, has so far not commented on the regulatory action taken in Europe.
