Food retailer pulls Kraft Velveeta product out of stores

Jan. 22, 2014

The single-serve pasta and beef dinners are being recalled due to improper labeling, specifically the lack of notification that the products contain hydrolyzed soy protein and dried soy sauce.

Kentucky-based food company Truitt Brothers Inc. has issued a recall for about 1.77 million pounds of Kraft Velveeta Cheesy Skillets. The single-serve pasta and beef dinners are being pulled out of stores due to improper labeling, more specifically the lack of notification that the products contain hydrolyzed soy protein and dried soy sauce, which are known to cause allergic reactions in some people.

The recall was announced by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which said that Truitt Brothers had notified the agency when the problem came to light. The products subject to recall were made between May 6, 2013 and Jan. 16, 2014 and were dispatched to Kraft Foods distribution centers and retail locations across the country. The FSIS added that the recall did not apply to other Velveeta or Kraft products.

Truitt Brothers discovered the problem as part of a routine quality check carried out recently. According to the food producer, the issue was the result of an inadvertent mistake at the label supplying company, where labels with correct ingredient information were mixed with labels bearing incorrect information. As soon as the problem was discovered, Truitt Brothers got in touch with the FSIS. So far, there have been no reports of consumers suffering adverse reactions as a result of eating the products. The FSIS is advising people concerned about such reactions to seek advice from their healthcare provider.
