ASTM International launches Critical and Emerging Technologies Division

ASTM International has launched its Critical and Emerging Technologies (CET) Division to accelerate standards development for technologies converging across industries.

The division, formerly known as the Advanced Manufacturing Division, builds on ASTM’s experience developing standards for advanced manufacturing. It focuses primarily on pre-standardization and post-standardization activities, with the goal of helping technologies move toward broader industrial adoption.

The CET Division works across approximately 10 ASTM committees and collaborates with organizations in roughly 25 countries. Its activities include identifying areas where standards are most needed, developing technology roadmaps, applying market intelligence, and creating training and certification opportunities.

The division covers technologies including robotics, exoskeletons, and commercial space; drones and unmanned systems; semiconductors; quantum technology; biotechnology; and artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence is a growing focus. ASTM’s F50 committee on artificial intelligence in manufacturing systems attracted more than 100 organizations from more than 20 countries during its first months.

According to ASTM International President Andy Kireta, the new division expands the organization’s role from standards development to broader standards solutions for technologies reshaping the global economy.

The division will also continue ASTM’s international standards work through partnerships involving industry, government, academia, and standards organizations. ASTM said this approach builds on its advanced manufacturing work, which developed into a globally adopted framework with international partners.

Upcoming activities include ASTM’s International Conference on Additive Manufacturing in September and an artificial intelligence workshop hosted by the F50 committee during ASTM’s October committee week.
